The March North Empty
PostSubject: The March North   The March North Icon_minitimeFri May 06, 2016 8:01 pm

Lady Lexia Vaele sighed incredibly bored as she traveled on her horse down the rocky trail towards Northpeak territory. She was forced to make the trip by her elder sister. Her power hungry bitch of a sister took away her ship and grounded her until she agreed to go and meet Lord Frost and his son and discuss to possibility of a marriage alliance. Something she didn't exactly want at all.. Being someones wife didn't appeal to her at all.. she would have to leave her home her friends, her ship.. She would mostly miss her ship...

She glance at her traveling company they were there to make sure she made the trip just as much as they were meant to protect her.. Most of them were her sisters guards, they thought she was being selfish.. Perhaps she was.. point was they were less then pleasant company.. they didn't like her, she didn't like them.

The trip North was a long one, it will take several days on horse back at best.. It felt like she was marching to her doom it was very frustrating..

To get away for a bit she kicked her horse in to a gallop of a minute so there was some distance between her and her escorts.

"Lady Vaele!" she heard on of the guards protest and she rolled her eyes.

"Relax... Not like I can't take care of myself" she muttered.

In the distance she saw a carriage being escorted by a moderate company, she was so bored she hoped it was someone interested in stopping and chatting.. or heck perhaps looking for a fight would heighten her spirits.

The March North Empty
PostSubject: Re: The March North   The March North Icon_minitimeMon May 09, 2016 8:46 pm

Nicholas sat in the carriage with his children and his late wife’s handmaiden. The trip to Riverstone wasn’t too long, all things considered, but it was plenty long enough. He could have had several carriages with at least one decoy to throw any would-be assassins off guard. Separate carriages would have also lessened the cramped feeling inside the transport. However, Nicholas didn’t like the idea of his children facing peril on their own. He equally didn’t like the idea of Vera being killed or captured; if one of his enemies captured the handmaiden... Vera knew too much.

He read a book to keep his mind off of the closed atmosphere in the carriage. Caprice was also reading. Liam started humming a hushed tune; Vera reached over to get the young heir apparent to the whole of Goldenglow’s attention. “If you’re gonna hum it, you might as well sing it. C’mon,” she said, and started to clap out the beat to the song.

Nicholas glanced up from his book to look at Vera, but she was ignoring him. He glanced at his son – the boy was too busy being embarrassed at having been caught and encouraged. Nicholas rolled his eyes and continued reading even as Vera started in on belting out the song... to which Liam soon followed suit. Nicholas sighed and did his best to block out the voices so he could follow along with his reading...

The carriage came to a rough and sudden stop. Vera and Liam paused in their singing. The motion knocked the book out of Nicholas’s hands. Brown eyes glanced out each of the windows in the carriage, but he couldn’t see anything.

“What’s happening, Papa?” asked Caprice.

Nicholas held a hand up for silence so he could listen.

One of the Blackfyre knights saw the rider heading straight for them and alerted the others. The commander stopped the carriage and ordered a majority of the men to surround it in a defensive formation. The commander himself and three others rode a short distance to meet their unexpected visitor.

The Knight Commander wore a suit of armor and helmet of black metal dotted with large flecks of gold. On his back he wore a red cape embroidered with a golden chalice brimming with black flames. Several banners of identical heraldry dotted the assembled company. “Lone rider, Name yourself and what business you have upon the Lord’s Highway,” he called out.

“They’re not alone... I see ten more riders, still some distance away,” muttered an archer.

Lexia recognized the Blackfyre heraldry and quirked an eye brow rode up to the knights, She heard her guard advance behind her and she held her hand out so they wouldn't provoke needless Hostility, They lined up behind her, ready to follow her orders if necessary. As if she was their Commander or Captain rather then Lady. They despised her sure, but it was the way they were all trained.

Lowering her hand she answered the Commander. "I am Lady Lexia of House Vaele in the Fingers.. traveling to meet with the Lords of Northpeak" she said in answer to his question. It was generally uncommon for Ladies of noble birth to ride out in the open like this.. But it was remarkably even more boring sitting in the stuffy carriage by herself with no company, then riding with bad company.

Lexia glanced at the carriage the knights surrounded in a defensive pattern and assumed a lordly or important person resided inside it. "I could ask you the same question Blackfyre knight.. though I assume you travel in similar purpose?" she asked figuring there was little other reason a lord would leave his manor. She more directed her question to the carriage then to the knight. He and his men were merely an escort to the true power of them, and she held little interest in them unless they wished to fight.

The Knight Commander’s eyes were confused – that much was clear even with the helmet obstructing some of his face from view. If this was true, then in the knight’s opinion she chose a very odd way to travel for someone of her noble status. It wasn’t this man’s job to lecture her. The commander signed for one of the archers behind him to inform the rest of the company what was going on. He followed her gaze to the carriage. “We are escorting Lord Blackfyre to meet with the new Lord of Riverstone.”

Vera reached to pick up the book Nicholas had accidentally dropped, and tried to hand it to him. Nicholas lowered her hands in silent instruction to leave the book on the carriage seat, and leaned to look out of the window on her and Liam’s side of the carriage. An archer approached them, but not in a way that was tactically sound if this was an assault on the road. “Who blocks our path, Archer?”

“The way is not blocked, Milord... but we’ve come upon a Lady Lexia Vaele, of The Fingers. She travels to meet with the Lords of Northpeak.” The archer was young, barely above the age of Nicholas’s own son. He glanced back at the two parties of knights. “I believe the Lady is requesting an audience of you, Milord.”

Nicholas pressed his lips together and exhaled through his nose. Out in the open was not the best place to conduct an audience. “Order the squire to bring my horse, and five men if you can spare them for an added security detail. Consider yourself included.”

“Yes, Milord.”

Liam and Caprice perked up as Nicholas made a move to exit the carriage. “Can we come, too, papa?” asked Caprice.

“I could be one of the guards... you just said you weren’t sure the knights could spare any extras,” added Liam.

Nicholas turned to look at his children and sighed. In any other circumstance, he might have allowed it. “You two are staying here. Our association with House Vaele is tentative, at best.”

“But papa...”

“Father...”

“What did I just say?!” Nicholas snapped. He settled his brown eyes on Vera. “Make sure they stay put,” he said, and without waiting for her usual compliance he stepped out of the carriage.

Nicholas’s palomino stallion stood waiting just outside the carriage, with his squire holding the reins. Five guards – two archers and three infantrymen, all mounted – stood in a crescent around the gold-colored horse and its black saddle. He refused assistance from the young squire and climbed into the saddle by himself, though muttered a courteous phrase of thanks as the youth handed him the reins. “Guard that carriage with your very life if you must... I’m counting on you.” Nicholas waited for the squire to nod his understanding before giving the horse its cue to move.

The small detail of knights followed Nicholas, eventually forming a small protective circle around him. It was an impressive sight: the knights on black horses with golden saddles, while the reigning Lord himself on a golden horse with a black saddle. The Knight Commander’s mount mirrored Nicholas’s, as a decoy in case of banditry or worse along the road.

Nicholas rode up to the two groups of knights, settling himself and his personal entourage between them. “It’s a rare honour to encounter a Lady of The Fingers.” He glanced at Lady Lexia’s guards, and took note of what he saw with the quirk of an eyebrow. “You’ve certainly picked a curious way to travel...”

One of the knights behind Lexia scoffed at Blackfyres statement thinking this lord didn't know this "lady" very well.

Lexia smirked ignoring the knight behind her, she whack him a new one when their chat was done. She was a little surprised when Lord Blackfyre road out to meet them, she half expected him to say the heck with them and ride on to his business . It was rather bold of her to request such a audience with him and for no good reason either. And she knew it, but was interesting that he came out to meet her anyway even if he didn't have to.

"Curious you say Lord Blackfyre? I ride a horse no different then you or your guards.. plus it is much more interesting then riding in a small dark bumpy carriage" she replied with a chuckle. " I don't find it curious at all"

Lexia allowed her horse to move a few steps toward the Lord, though not aggressively "I know.. it is not safe to ride out in the opened is it?" she said in a slightly quieter voice. "If so.. then so be it I say, anyone who wishes to cause trouble for me on the dreaded march to Northpeak are welcome to try it.. I could use the distraction" she said with a scoff and a mix of dread as she looked on to the north before turning her attention to Lord Blackfyre.

Nicholas swore he heard a scoff, and fixed a sharp gaze in the sound’s general direction. The expression took but the blink of an eye, and in the next he once again focused on Lexia as she spoke. “To each their own preference, I suppose.”

A dark eyebrow rose as he listened to Lexia all but dare the dangers of the road to come for her. Nicholas similarly quieted his voice. “I know little of what travel may be like for you. For me, safety is limited with every increasing amount of freedom. To welcome danger as you do is entirely foreign to me.”

Brown eyes followed the conversation, gazing north. The mere thought of how brutal the weather could get in Northpeak was enough to make the Lord want to shiver. “For what it’s worth I doubt there is a single marriage arrangement, or at hope’s best very few, that are initiated with fondness for the matter.”
