Mission Homebase Empty
PostSubject: Mission Homebase   Mission Homebase Icon_minitimeSun Mar 27, 2016 3:24 pm

At least an hour drive from any big city there is an old farm house that is hidden off the main road by trees and bushes. The only sign of activity on the area are vehicle tracks across the field and in the treeline. Tracks are deep and worn as if the trip was made many times. The path leads to fence that is coiled to prevent someone from climbing over it. The fence looks hand made like it was a patch work of different fences, some parts are made of wood and others metal mesh.

There is a hum coming from inside the compound, its the hum of a generator producing power and the sound of a car engine running.

There was a woman that lived inside the camp, her name was Sam. Sam had been in the Military when the world fell apart, her mission was to try and put some form of civilization together again. It was a tall order with only so much of her team left after the virus and riots were done she and those left of her team were to build secured  camps and help people get organized again. It was slow going since people were slow to trust or they would rather take all that was offered and then take off on there own.

Sam was in her Jeep planning head over to check on another base camp like her own a friend of hers was running. She hadn't heard news from them in a while and she worried something might have happened. So she prepared for worst, she was in her military gear, protected from gunfire for the most part and was armed with a knife, pistol and a crossbow. She also had a small supply kit of food and water. She never brought much when she left her camp just in  case she was put in a position to give up her supplies it wasn't a big loss.

She pressed a button on dashboard and a second later the gate to her compound opened for her to drive out.

Finlay’s hands were covered in cold sweat. His knuckles were white with fear, and his foot was close to grinding the accelerator of his car into the floorboards. Not far behind him were three motorcycles each piled two or three men high, whooping and shouting with sadistic glee at their target.

Fire from a shotgun echoed out, and Finlay ducked. “Shit, shit, shit...!” He jumped when his side view mirror was hit and shattered into many small pieces. “Can’t lead them home... gotta lose them...” Who would have thought a simple supply run would turn out to be such an ordeal?

He reached blindly for the pistol he had placed on the dashboard. Scraping noises as he drove told him the firearm had slid around a bit while the chase went on, but he didn’t have the time to deliberately look for it and keep his eyes on where he was going. His hand bumped a switch...

“Oh no I can’t slow down, I can’t hold back, though you know you wish I could... oh no there ain’t no rest for the wicked, til we close our eyes for good,” blared the speakers. Finlay had accidentally turned on the CD player.

Finlay swore, glared around for his pistol, and made a grab for it. Another shot rang out, this one shattering his windshield. He swerved, almost flipped the car clean over, but regained control of the vehicle and sped onward. Finlay rolled down his window, stuck his arm out just enough to aim the pistol behind him, and fired.

Another shot, and Finlay tucked himself into the upholstery of his seat as much as possible to avoid getting hit. It was with a sense of relief, followed up quickly by overwhelming dread, that Finlay saw he was heading straight for a farm house. There could be survivors in there, but there could also be another group like the ones on his heels already. The circles of barbed wire atop the fencing told Finlay there wasn’t a good chance he could jump the fence and let the raiders just take his car. “Please, just back the f*** off. Please…” Fin whispered. He just wanted to go home.

As he got closer he saw a gate opening up, and a car starting to head out. “HELP ME!” he shouted, hoping that whoever was driving the vehicle had heard him.

Sam was met gun fire and a car chase the moment her gate opened she blinked in surprise for a moment not expecting to find trouble so close to her door step. But she quickly reacts putting her jeep in reverse retreating back in to her camp and prepare to defend it.

"Come on move!" she shouted to the man that seemed to be the one being chased by the motorcycles. She wanted to help if she could, but she couldn't keep the gate opened for long and let the motorcycles in the camp as well. She punched the button to close that gate before getting out of her jeep and running to a ladder that over looked the area in front of the gate. Once the gate had closed she grabbed a small gadget and lit a fuse on the top of it before throwing it at the Motorcycles. A second after it landed on the ground and thick smoke spewed out of it. A smoke that burned a persons eyes so they couldn't see clearly and made breathing a problem as well. It also didn't help is smelt like rotten eggs. The gas wasn't lethal, but highly unpleasant to those exposed to it. Once her drive way was covered in the foul gas she leap down from her position on the wall to deal with her new guest. With her crossbow in hand.

"Easy, I don't want to hurt you, but I will defend this place if you cause trouble. I am Major Samantha Carter with the US Military" she said steadily her aim still on he man if he did indeed want trouble.

Finlay saw the car in the gateway reverse, and took that as an invitation to safety. He swerved, cringing as all of his pursuers came into view. The moment the side of his car was exposed the raiders opened fire on it, breaking the glass and putting bullet holes in the metal. Fin stepped on the gas, accelerator all the way to the floor now, as he noticed the gate was closing. If they were going to help him, he had to do everything he could to get in there regardless of whether or not they turned out to be friendly.

Brakes shrieked in protest once Finlay cleared the gate, and he pulled around to see just who had provided rescue. He caught a glimpse of a woman in military gear throwing what looked like a grenade, but the smell and smoke soon after told him it was some sort of crowd control device. He stepped out of his vehicle knowing that there was a possibility that doing so could be a mistake, tucked his pistol into his belt, and approached the woman.

“Are they gone?!” he asked, ragged and out of breath, and then noticed she had a crossbow trained on him. Finlay swallowed hard, went a shade paler than he already was, and slowly put his hands up. With his arms down, his old army jacket concealed the pistol at his hip nicely. With his hands up, it was plain to see that he was armed with a pistol and a hunting knife. “I... I don’t want trouble. I’m just tryin’ to get home to my boy... N-Name’s Finlay McKenna... Please don’t shoot me...”

Sam took in his reaction, his paled face and trembling flee compelled her to lower her weapon. "Alright.. Finlay, it is okay I am not going to shoot you, Just a precaution, wouldn't be the first time I helped someone to have them try to rob me after" she said in a steady voice. She eyed his vehicle and the damage it sustained in the encounter.

"I could probably fix that or get you another car if you want.. Might need to stay in here for a little while anyway while the gas outside clears" she said putting her crossbow away on a holder on the back of her uniform. "How far out are you?" she asked curious, wondering how long he would be on the road before getting back to his son.

She walked closer to his vehicle to get a better look at the damage. Sam was a scientist in the military though she also had a talent for building and fixing things which came in handy at the end of the world with so many things broken.

Finlay let out a huge sigh of relief when Sam lowered her weapon, and lowered his hands. "Everyone I've encountered since the world's gone 'FUBAR' has either wanted to rob me or shoot me... or both," he said, trying to steady the shake in his voice.

He noticed her watching the car, so he turned to look at it as well. It hadn't been all that new when he first bought it a little under fourteen years ago. Finlay was honestly surprised the raiders hadn't shot the engine or tried to set his car on fire. In his opinion it was a miracle the poor thing still stood there in almost one piece.

Finlay looked from Samantha to the cloud of gas and back again. "I know a little bit about mechanics... if you have the supplies and want to help with the repairs, I'd appreciate it. But I'm sorry to say I don't have much of anything on hand to trade for your services..."

Brown eyebrows scrunched together in thought at the question. "Mm... Fifteen, maybe twen'y minutes? I live in an apartment on the outskirts of the next town over." Fin followed Samantha over to his car to further assess the damage. "How long have you been set up over here? Don't think I ever saw ya around before all this..."

Sam waved off his apology at not being able to trade anything for her service, "Don't worry about it, I have been assigned to try and bring some order back to peoples lives. At the moment it means getting you car back in.. safer condition. And I got more then enough parts and tools" she said not worried. In the back of the farm house was her garage of sorts, other cars, car parts, engines, batteries, you name it she has it. Along with military grade tools to work on everything.

Sam thought for a moment at his question, she had always been set up here, she never really advertised where she was to people since she didn't want raiders organizing to take her down if the knew the supplies she had on the property.

"I try to not be seen unless I have to be. Like when I am helping people such as you, but i have always been here since it became clear to the government just how bad things were going to get.. I used to be apart of a team of 20.. 5 of them were supposed to stay here and help build this camp. But they all died the others are spread out doing the same thing I am trying to set up secured camps like this" Sam explained as she looked at the undercarriage of the vehicle, to see it leaking fluid. "Hmm might have to operate" she said jokingly. "Will need to get my tool kit" She said as she got up.

"You said you had a son? whats his name?" she asked curious and wanting to make normal conversation for a change like people used to.

Fin blinked, a bit stunned that she didn’t want anything in return. He hadn’t met a stranger with that sort of attitude in a very long time. It was a refreshing change of pace. On the other hand, Finlay wondered if there would be some sort of catch later on that he didn’t yet know about. He didn’t have enough information about her or her operation to make assumptions or come to conclusions. Fin had been honorably discharged from the military a long time ago; he wasn’t on the government’s ‘need to know’ list.

Brown eyes lowered their gaze to the grass. “I’m sorry to hear about your teammates...” he offered. A part of him was curious to know how they had died, but he didn’t want to seem too nosy either.

At the joke, Fin smiled and laughed quietly. The sound was almost foreign to his ears. “Her life is in your hands, doctor,” he replied, trying to carry on the banter. Finlay started to offer Sam a hand up, out of gentlemanly courtesy, but she stood without assistance.

When talk turned to his son, Finlay absent-mindedly reached for his wallet. There were family photos in there that he carried with him wherever he went. “Yeah... His name’s Kayden. ... Fourteen... He’s not alone back home, but...” the man trailed off. Fin wasn’t quite sure how much he should say, or how honest he should be. “... y’know how children are. Right about par with worried-sick parents.

“I should probably text him, if this blasted thing even has power...” Fin muttered, pulling a cell phone out of his jacket pocket.

Sam nodded to his words about her teammates " Thanks.. the virus took them same as many others" she said with a sigh. She was sure that Fin had people he cared about that were taken that way as well. She was sure pretty much everyone left on earth lost someone to the virus.

She opened her tool kit to start the repairs and glanced at the pictures Fin carried on him of his son and smiles slightly at the picture. "He is a good looking boy, those big Brown eye must have gotten him out of some trouble " she commented with amusement. " I don't have any kids myself, I have.. or had a niece and nephew.. I am not sure if they are alive or not yet.. they'd be about his age..." She did plan to find out though sometime. Her brother was out somewhere and he would know she was sure of it.

She heard him mutter about his cell having power, "Ah I got a power cord around somewhere if you have a charger with you. You can hook it up to the generator over there" she said pointing to a generator that had a long extension cord coming out of it. Power was a rare thing these days aside from batteries in car engines most people had none.

A true and genuine smile threatened to split Finlay’s face in two. “Thank you. And yes, those eyes have gotten him out of loads of mischief... my coloring, but the shape matches his mother’s. He’s a great kid... despite the usual complications of adolescence.”

He tilted his head to the side slightly, surprised that she didn’t have any children, but he wasn’t going to say anything. The thought on his mind and at the tip of his tongue was far too bold, to presumptuous, and Finlay didn’t want to wear out his welcome or come across as uncomfortably weird. “For what it’s worth, I hope you find them,” he said.

Finlay couldn’t believe his ears. A simple enough looking farmhouse, housing a military woman and a camp presumably with other people living in it, with who only knew what kind of resources as well as electricity and the ability to charge the modern, previously-every-day devices? He reached into his car through the broken glass to retrieve his phone charger, grinned at her, and retrieved the extension cord. He plugged the one end of the charger into the phone, and the other into the extension cord, then sat on the ground to wait. The phone gave him a ‘please wait’ message, and Fin bit his lip. “C’mon, you know how to charge ya bratty wee thing...” he growled at his phone. It beeped to confirm that it was charging, and Finlay waited several moments before he could believe the little battery symbol showing it filling up with power. He laughed with a mixture of surprise and delight, watching the screen repeat the same display over and over.

He looked up at Samantha with an expression in his eyes that matched the laugh on his lips. “This almost feels like a dream... Technology addiction sucks when the power’s run out,” he chortled, and proceeded to type out a message to Kayden –

Sam nodded "Thanks, I hope to find them to, or at the very least hear some news.. that way I don't have to wonder.." she said. It was the not knowing the was bugging her the most, all she could do for now was worry weather they were alive or not. Regardless she was shielding herself against the possible worst news. " If my brother Ace is still alive I am sure I will find him sooner or later, if anyone in the family can survive it's him..." yet evidently she still held hope..

She smiled at the reaction she got from him when she said he could charge his device she had seen similar reactions from people who hadn't had power in weeks. " Tell me about it, when it broke last week it was all I could focus on to fix it" she said as she thought back to when she ran out of power it was frustrating. "Suppose we are still lucky we have satellite access to text people, eventually that network will break down to if it can't be maintained" She said as she clanked away on the engine.

Fin's phone beeped a bit later with a short message back. "Ok, will save some food for u, b careful"

Brown eyebrows twitched in curiosity at the name, but he didn't comment further. Instead he wondered about his own siblings, and where they might have gone... if they truly went anywhere. Fin did his good deed for the day: he attempted to inspire hope where there might not be any. No reason to dwell on grim prospects...

Finlay nodded his understanding. "I'd probably have done the same in your place, swearing at it every step of the way. If the fence is electrified, that'd be a big drop in your defenses." He bit his lip and looked back at his phone as Sam mentioned the one thing he knew but didn't want to think about: the day when all of the still-operating systems broke down without anyone to make the necessary repairs. What would he return home to if he hadn't been able to send that message to his son - if he had absolutely no way of getting word out that he was alright? Would he find an empty house, or would Kayden still be waiting? Fin didn't have a clue, and after a couple of possible scenarios ran through his mind he didn't really want to consider it anymore.

"I used to be a communications officer for the army... a long time ago. I don't know what all goes into maintaining something like that. But maybe someday... if we ever need to... I could take a stab at it. What's the worst that could possibly happen, right?"

He was about to stand and walk over to help Sam with the repairs when his phone beeped. "Oh, you're makin' noise now, too! How about that?" Without a word to explain to Sam who or what that remark was directed at he pressed a button to view the message. Fin smiled slightly and touched the screen after reading the words. "That's my boy..." he whispered, backed out of the message, and hesitated before setting the phone down.

Knees popped as he stood, stretched, slid off his army jacket, and casually tossed it onto the roof of the car. Fin placed the heels of his hands on the edge of the car's open hood. "Not sure I really wanna look. How bad is it?" he asked, leaning forward to see what part of the engine she was working on and if he should focus on repairing a different section of the vehicle, instead.

Sam's attention perked when he mentioned her was an officer in the army, she lifted her head and chuckled lightly giving him a salute with 2 fingers. "With the cellphone networks? Worst case scenario is when they go out there won't be getting them back unless we manage to get thing back the way they were" she said, though if she was honest it was a long way off from that happening anytime soon. "But there are other ways of communication other then cell phones though" she said pausing in her repairs to show him her radio.

She smiled again as she realized he was talking to his phone and started to think how sad he would be when cell phones eventually lost their connectivity to the world.

At his question to how bad the damage was she lifted her head to look at him again. "Ah it could be worse but not by much, could probably turn it on and manage to drive it out if you needed to. It wouldn't last long after though" she said stepping back to let him see what she meant. "We will need to replace a few things.. will need new tubing over there. Patch or replace you oil tank.. your transition will need replacing.. seems a bullet punctured it. Most of the fluid it leaked is your transmission fluid" she said contemplating what else was broken one could almost see the wheels turning under her blonde head.

"It will need at least a day or two of work.." she continued thinking cause she still had to check on the other encampment that had gone silent so she couldn't remain here for days straight. "Possibly longer.. I suggest if you want to get back to your boy before dinner time you could take one of the cars I have here for the time being? and you can come back for it" she said. The only other option was to allow him to remain here by himself to work on the car while she left. And while she wanted to help him, she didn't know him well enough to know he wouldn't take her resources once she turned her back on him.

Finlay chortled when Sam gave him a salute and mimicked her. “Yeah, I know there are other ways. Guess I just get used to something and don’t like to change things up unless I absolutely have to. ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ or something like that,” he said. His father was like that these days, too. Fin began wondering (and not for the first time) if he was getting old. He shrugged.

He ducked under the hood to see what Sam was talking about after she backed up. Fin listened to her assessment of the damage, and gingerly touched certain parts of the car to examine the damage himself. The man swore under his breath yet was beyond thankful Sam wasn’t a mechanic from the world before. The charge for labor alone would have been through the roof. He sighed and ran a hand through his hair. "In other words, she's pretty f***ed up... Poor little thing."

Fin bit his lip just thinking about all of the work that needed to be done. He needed to get home if only for the simple reason of spending time with his family. “I should be getting back soon... and I don’t want to impose by adding an unexpected mouth to feed here,” Fin said, pulling out his keychain and fiddling with it in order to release the one for the car. He held the single key out for her to take.

“How will I be able to contact you if I need help again?” he asked. “I promise I won’t bring unwelcome company with me next time.” Fin couldn’t stop the silly but sheepish little grin that spread across his lips.

Sam carefully took the key he offered and nodded her head, "I will get her back into shape as soon as I can Finlay" she said with the steady voice and slight smile on her face, she was looking forward to the new project.

"Ah, yeah I will need to contact you as well when your car is done" she said as she walked over to a gray plastic container and popped open the lid. Inside were a dozen radio's similar to the one she had on her jacket. She picked one up and handed him one.

"Tune it to frequency 103.02 and you will be able to contact me" she explained and she chuckled at his promise of not bringing back more unwelcome company, it was cute, not exactly a promise he could realistically control. "I hope so, else there will be another car that will need patching" she said though she was kidding. "Just be careful out there Finlay, Your son is lucky to have a father that is still alive and cares about him" it was after all his plea to go back to his son that convinced her he wasn't a threat.

"Come on I will get you a replacement car in the mean time" she said heading to the backyard where the collection of cars were located.

If it hadn't been for the faint brush of fingertips, Finlay wouldn't have even registered that she took the key. Although he wasn't in danger anymore his nerves were shot. He nodded; he wasn't entirely sure if he could trust her, but he was willing to take the chance on anyone that chose to ask questions first and shoot later.

Fin followed Sam over to the gray plastic container. He tilted his head, curious as to what it contained. Brown eyes blinked at the amount of radios that were in there. Finlay hadn't seen that many radios since... well, since his army days. He took the offered radio and looked it over. Yep: he could point out each part, its function, and probably had the skill to take it all apart and put it back together if there ever was a situation where he would have to do so.

"103.02," he echoed, turning his attention from her to the frequency dial so he wouldn't forget. Chocolate eyes looked straight into Samantha's azure ones when she told him to be careful - the neutral expression of his face was intended to be neither fearful nor threatening. He was curious. "I'll be careful; don't have to worry about that," he said, letting a small smile twist his lips at the thought of his son. Finlay clipped the radio to his belt. "My boy's pretty much the only thing keepin' going, lately..."

Fin grabbed his army jacket off the roof of his vehicle and hauled a backpack out of the passenger seat before following Samantha. A glance at the farmhouse and its surrounds told him the area was expansive compared to his little apartment, even though technically he and his family had all of the apartments to themselves if they wanted to break in and utilize the space. Finlay reached for the pack of cigarettes in his back pocket and tapped the box on his hand, opened the top of it, and pulled out a single cigarette with his lips. "Are there other people here?" he asked, patting down his pockets in search for his lighter. It was on him before and during the car chase...

Sam walked towards that back where her other car was as she replied to his question. "Yep we have a few families here, looking for safety from bandits, couples others just trying to survive and not hurt anyone." she said as she pointed further down the property where tents tarps and a shed were located.

She also had a few bandits she had arrested of sorts, after knocking them unconscious with a gas bomb when they attacked the camp. They were currently inside the basement she had made in a sort of holding cell until she figured out what to do with them. One hand she could kill them.. since that was what they wanted to do to them.. But now that they were caught in a place that seemed to have it together they wanted to join her..

"I also have a a few bandits secured in a holding cell as well.." she said after some thought. "Still deciding what to do with them."

Finlay followed close behind, listening to every word. He found his lighter wedged into a corner of his jacket pocket. When Samantha pointed to the tents, tarps, and shed, Finlay put one hand to his forehead to shield his eyes and squinted through the sunlight. The camp was small, but not unpopulated... and there were children. Fin couldn’t even begin to imagine what this new world looked like to a small child that had known something very different not long before.

Talk of bandits broke his attention from the tents. “Bandits in a holding cell... now that’s something I’d pay to see, someday,” he replied; there was a snarl beneath the congenial tone. Finlay lit his cigarette and took a drag from it. “Not sure what to suggest doing about them... other than a punishment that may be too harsh in a world with so few people as it is... but I’m sure they’ll tell you anything to get you to set ‘em free.”

He chuckled as a thought struck him. “If the world hadn’t gone to shite, and the judicial system still worked, I could have recommended you to some very good prosecuting attorneys.”

Sam opened the gate to the back yard where there were a few cars most of them had been the vehicles of her team members but when they died the cars fell to her and she had all the keys. She tilted her head at Fins words of the judicial system "Hmm Perhaps we could think of a kind of Judicial system here. Put the captured pirates on trial and decide if they want to stay pirates or join us" she said thoughtfully. It wasn't perfect but she didn't want to be the one to decide if a prisoner lived or died. She wasn't a queen or any kinda judge.

"So if you still know any attorneys I might still take you up on that " she said with a chuckle before stopping in front of the cars.

"But anyway here are the Cars, none have Gas at the moment but I can fix that after you pick one" she said. It really didn't matter which one he picked, none were really fancy but they were all in working order. She drained them of gasoline so just in case some got any ideas they couldn't stolen so easily.

Finlay followed, and blinked at the amount of cars that were stashed on the property. There weren’t many, exactly, but there were quite a few more than he was expecting to be available. A part of him wondered who their previous owners were. He took a drag from his cigarette as she spoke, thinking about how a judicial system would have to work in the chaotic world they were in... and how loopholes could, and undoubtedly would, be exploited.

He nodded and looked at the vehicles available. “Quite a variety you have here,” Fin said, wandering around the assortment of parked cars to look at them closer. He wasn’t looking for anything particularly fancy – that would draw attention.

As Fin took a closer look at each of the cars, he kept the conversation going. “Your camp, your rules, I suppose, regarding the judicial system... As for any attorneys that might still be alive out in that mess,” Finlay gestured to the world beyond the camp’s gates, “You’re currently looking at the only one I can think of. ...Former attorney, that is. I got out of the firm years ago to pursue computer programming.”

He wandered back over to a forest green compact car. A playful smirk slowly twisted his lips. “I’ll go with this one, if there aren’t any objections,” he said. Finlay’s right eye twitched; whether it was a random spasm in the eye or a casual wink was anyone’s guess.

"Yes they all belonged to my old coworkers" she said since they passed away they had no other need for them.

Sam blinked when he claimed himself to be a former attorney, not that it was a big deal or anything but still it was something that might help with rebuilding society with someone who knew the ins and outs of the law.

"That might be useful later on with someone around who knows things about the law, would you mind if I called you for legal advice once in a while?" she asked with a smile as he picked the vehicle he wanted. She nodded "Nope no objections, come on this way I give you some gas for it and the keys" she said as she showed him to shed where she kept those supplied.

Finlay smiled. “I’d consider it an honor, if you did.” He wasn’t sure what in the world Sam would need legal advice on, but he wasn’t about to pass up the chance to talk to a woman... and a pretty one, at that. Part of him wanted to point out how state laws would be a huge gray area with the world as it was, but at the same time he didn’t want to completely geek out on it. The topic of law when in its longest and most drawn out form bored even Finlay on a good day. No... best to let that conversation start itself, should the occasion call for it.

He followed her to the shed, trying to remember all of the details about the camp. “There really isn’t too much left your settlement seems to actually need, is there?” Fin asked. Half of him was in awe of the little community, and it showed. The other half of his mind wasn’t quite sure what to make of it all. This could be a much safer place for Kayden to live, if their circumstances became too dire. "What sort of requirements must people meet in order to live here?"

Sam thought about the camp for a moment as she gave him the keys and picked up a container of gas. "There is always room for improvement, we need a bigger area to grow food.. the stores of food we have will only hold out for so long. A few people have started growing there own gardens. We only have so much room for them and the soil isn't the best for gardening here.. but making it work for now" she said.

Sam hadn't thought of requirements yet.. they still had room for people so she wasn't exactly being restrictive. "The willingness to work together in a community again I suppose.. We make this work by helping everyone out.. It is hard for some people they arrive and want to hoard all their supplies for them selves.. which.. is understandable I suppose considering things. But it would be no help to the community here.." She said trying to explain how the camp worked and sustained its self. It all also required a element of trust.. Which was hard to come by now a days as well.. hence why extra gas and keys were kept in a locked shed..

"Having thoughts on joining us Fin?" she asked curiously as she stepped out of the shed and locked it again. "It isn't perfect here.. before you start thinking we are a paradise.. Isn't much in the way of privacy.. And it is a lot of hard work." she cautioned. That has happened with a few people to.. Some survivors feel so relieved to be living there they don't realize it isn't easy to keep it running.. Some touchy, or rather closed minded people have accused her of being a slave driver.. She doesn't force people to work.. They are welcome to leave if they want, and she works just as hard if not more then anyone else in the camp to keep it going.

Fin accepted the keys and looked them over. He couldn’t help but be reminded of his ex-wife’s garden at the mention of needing more room to grow food. The soil was excellent for the job, last time he knew, and she composted every bit of organic material she could. Finlay started getting ideas of how he could repay Sam’s kindness... provided he could pluck up the courage to go back there. For now, he kept quiet; there was no sense getting anyone’s hopes up. Pirates could have decimated the garden by now... “Maybe for things that don’t require much root space, the garden could be expanded vertically with shelves or something,” he suggested with a shrug, and then a chuckle. “Something I saw on T.V. once...”

He listened to her closely. In all honesty he was looking for what the catch was to what seemed like an incredibly sweet deal. A secure place to live, a way to generate electricity for people to charge their many electronic devices, and provide power to lighting and other household functions... surely there had to be something. Finlay bit his lip at the mention of hoarding; he had started doing just that in an attempt to stockpile supplies for his family, and kept the accumulation of stuff well hidden in case there was an attempt to ransack the apartment.

Brown eyes glanced at her in response to her question. He was quiet for several long seconds, and shifted his weight from one foot to the other while Sam closed and locked the shed. Finlay was thankful she had more to say about the camp as it bought him more time to think while they walked back to the cars. And there it was – for him, anyway. The little kink that Finlay knew could be a big deal for him: lack of privacy. He discreetly licked his lips. “Erm... I’m not really sure yet. Can’t make a decision like that for my family without getting their input on it, too. Did something like that unintentionally one time... caught a lot of hell for it.” Finlay tried to chuckle at the distant memory.

He sighed when they reached the green compact car again. “If you find my car is beyond repair, or would be too great a drain on your resources, you can scrap it for parts. Just let me know so I can get a few things out of there, first...”
