-How I act-
Personality: In older days, Cato tended to keep to himself and shun the company of others. Now that meeting another person is so rare, he's pleased by every new acquaintance -- at least until they prove themselves to be burdensome, anyway. He's perfectly willing to help a stanger out and would gladly give anyone the shirt off of his back.
Once crossed, however, it is extremely difficult to win back his good opinion. He's a powerful man, so angering him is inadvisable at best.
-History-
Your Story Please? Cato Fox is no stranger to being a survivor. At the age of seven, he was the only survivor of a terrible car accident which claimed the lives of both his parents, his grandmother, and his three year old sister, Rachael. Cato, sitting in the middle back seat with no seat belt, was saved when he was flung through the windshield, mere seconds before the vehicle was engulfed in flames. He spent a month in the hospital recovering from his injuries, after which he was taken in by the grandfather for whom he was named.
Although he dearly adored his "Gramps," as Cato called him, the accident left him scarred mentally, physically, and emotionally, and he began having difficulty in school. He dropped out at the age of sixteen and began a long series of dead-end jobs, ranging from flipping burgers at a fast food joint, to working at a lumber mill.
At the age of 23, he met a girl named Jennifer Followill and fell madly in love. Things went well for awhile, and when he was 24, they learned that Jennifer was pregnant. The young couple was thrilled, and decided to move in together and start a family. Tragically, Jennifer miscarried soon thereafter, and the pair was crushed. They weathered a tough year but by the end of it, decided to try again, and so they had Charlie.
Happiness once again reigned in their home, and even Gramps' death only brought the little family closer. Caleb had long since lost contact with his aunts and uncles, who had written him off as a failure when he dropped out of school, but Jennifer's family welcomed him with open arms. However, Jennifer started to long for the nicer things in life, which a job as a night shift security guard could not provide. Cato took on an additional job as an overseer in a local factory, but the long hours proved more than their family could bear. Having never married, Jennifer simply left Cato and took Charlie with her, leaving Cato more alone than he'd ever been in his life.
He quit the factory job and stayed on with his security gig, which paid quite well for a single man living alone. The years that followed were dark and lonely, as Cato battled severe depression. By the time the virus struck, he had slowly been coming out of his personal darkness, due in no small part to gaining visitation with Charlie. He'd recently applied for a job as a local fire fighter -- a real career, at last, and was trying to win Jennifer back from her new fiancé when all hell broke loose.
Accustomed to working with his hands, Cato didn't have much difficulty adjusting to his new life insofar as the surviving was concerned. He'd always been very handy, knew how to hunt and clean an animal, possessed rudimentary cooking skills, and knew how to chop wood. Making it through a Canadian winter without power and surviving only on what he could hunt seemed like a bad idea even for a consummate survivor like Cato, and so he made the only logical choice -- he headed South, planning to keep going til he hit water. His only ambition was to set up near a river, and hopefully find some other survivors.
One thing he never expected was to become successful after the "end of the world". Turned out his skill for turning nearly anything into alcohol made him a very popular man -- significantly slowing down his progress to the coast as everyone he met wanted him to turn water into wine. As supplies on store shelves began to hit their expiration dates, alcohol became extremely valuable for its multiple uses as wound disinfectant, pain relief potion, and household cleaner, as well as the good old-fashioned use of allowing people to drink their troubles away. In the land of the lost, the man raised in the wilderness is king.
